Start the new year with an exciting kick-off that captivates your students and sparks their thinking! January is the perfect time to reinforce classroom rules and procedures, but it’s also an invaluable opportunity to address personal and academic goals with your fourth and fifth graders.
New Year Personal Reflections
Let's face it, upper elementary students thrive when they can share their thoughts and feelings! As they grow more self-aware and introspective, this is an ideal moment to introduce a set of engaging print-and-go New Year reflection and resolution activities. These activities encourage students to explore their motivations and aspirations for the year ahead.
One Word Resolutions
Have you heard about the "One Word for Kids" approach? If the idea of crafting a New Year’s resolution feels daunting, suggest that your students focus on just one word that symbolizes their intent for a successful year. Begin by reading a captivating book or showing an inspiring video about the One Word concept.

After enjoying the book or video, assist your students in selecting their ONE WORD. Provide them with a curated list of inspiring words and have them choose 3-5 that resonate most with them. From that selection, they will pick one word to concentrate on throughout the year. Together, let’s craft a vibrant banner showcasing their chosen word, and display it proudly on a festive New Year bulletin board!
ELA: New Year Activities Around the World
These ready-to-print resources are ideal for your ELA centers. Your students will explore a variety of New Year's traditions celebrated around the globe, including the vibrant festivities in New York City, the unique customs in Spain, the colorful celebrations in Haiti, the lively parties in Brazil, the traditional practices in Japan, and the special rituals in Australia.
Math: New Year Decimal Activities
In my math class, I am constantly teaching new skills while reviewing old skills. The first week back always feels like a double dose of review. I love using one of these color-by-code activities in centers the first week back and another one for homework. It's a great review of adding and subtracting decimals, multiplying decimals, and multiplying by the power of 10.
The beginning of the New Year is an excellent opportunity to review rules and procedures while emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and reflection. Remind your students that everyone has areas for improvement, and setting goals can help us move in a positive direction.
