Videos about the Florida Everglades

I like to begin with an overview of the Everglades. I struggled to find suitable videos for my students—many on YouTube are either too basic or dull. Here are a couple of videos I recommend and why.

Rock the Park video preview

This Everglades video features two YouTubers exploring the area while sharing information about alligators, pythons, mangroves, manatees, and the ecosystem. While it may not be as detailed as other documentaries, it's relatable for kids and keeps them engaged. Duration: 20 minutes.

Everglades forest

The video uniquely combines information about the Everglades' habitat and the history of the Native Americans who lived there. It highlights the importance of tree islands in the ecosystem and discusses how human activities have altered the Everglades through land drainage for agriculture and development.

America's National Park video title page.

This National Geographic video has beautiful videography and clearly labeled sections. The video includes alligators, panthers, osprey, key deer, and manatees, but the video is not narrated. It is just videos of the animals.

Books About the Florida Everglades

A cormorant spreads its wings by a waterway in the Everglades, with title "Everglades Forever".

The reader accompanies a 5th-grade class as they go on a field trip to the Everglades. There is a lot of information packed into each page. Beautiful photographs bring the details to life.

Book cover with title "14 Fun Facts About Florida’s Everglades".

This book is perfect for your reluctant readers. It is full of Everglade information, but it is broken up in an interesting kid-friendly way.

A Native American storyteller guides a boat of children down the Everglades. He tells them about the Everglades' beauty, uniqueness, and challenges. I can't find it on Amazon, but it is available through Barnes and Noble.
